Lubbock’s Most Interesting House May Soon Be an Airbnb

Lubbock, Texas, was the unlikely scene where one man spent over nearly 35 years creating a house that was intended far more to be sculpture than livable. Robert Bruno built the entire thing himself out of Corten steel.
The house is all organic shape and rusty, red metal, defying gravity on four comparatively thin legs. It’s not surprising to learn from looking at it that there was never really a blueprint, just a desire to create something aesthetically interesting and a passion for welding. According to several accounts of the iconic’s structure’s lore, Bruno would often tear apart and restart sections of the house if inspiration struck.

Bruno moved to Texas in the early ’70s to teach architecture at Texas Tech. Before long, he started working on his visionary project in 1974. Bruno headed out most days to work on the house alone, with just his own homemade hydraulic crane as a companion. Every inch of the project is the very definition of “labor of love.”
In an interview with Texas Monthly Reporter, Bruno said, “I feel very privileged because not a lot of people get the opportunity to spend this much time doing something they really want to do.” In 2008, Bruno died, but not until he had the chance to live in his extraordinary creation for several months.
However, the house wasn’t (and still isn’t) finished. The steel behemoth was bequeathed to his daughter, then sold this past fall. Now, the plan is to make it an Airbnb rental.
There’s still some work to be done in bringing the sculpture/home up to code so until then, here are some other Airbnbs near Lake Ransom Canyon:
