This Cigolle X Coleman Venice Beach Property Epitomizes Contemporary Cool

If off-the-charts coolness is among your criteria for a second shelter, we’ve found the house for you.
This showstopper, just blocks from Venice Beach, is the handiwork of award-winning Los Angeles-based Cigolle X Coleman — the “Y” in the renowned trio of XYZ Houses.
It also happens to be the personal residence of architect Reid Cigolle. His parents, firm founders Mark Cigolle and Kim Coleman, have been designing and building seriously stylish properties on the city’s west side since 1982.

According to the Compass listing, the ‘Y’ house is a “stunning live/work residence,” tucked behind Venice’s lively Abbot Kinney Boulevard. “The contrast of materials—from stainless steel and perforated anodized aluminum, to raw plywood and hand-plastered surfaces—blend refined cutting-edge details with an artistic Venice aesthetic.”
It’s the first of the three alphabet named properties to hit the market. Asking price: $2.65 million.
After years of living in Pacific Palisades, Reid says he was attracted to the area’s urbanity.
“Many of our favorite classic Venice projects by architects like Frank Gehry and Morphosis are back houses or additions that created a unique scale and lot density that is difficult to find in contemporary projects.”

The house itself is a showstopper, literally built around a dramatic steel spiral staircase. Three levels provide 2,081-square-feet of living space. “The staircase feels very powerful in the space and sets up the relationship between the different floors,” adds Reid.

Main living areas evoke an inviting, casual feel thanks to heated floors and glass walls. A decked-out kitchen features Bulthaup cabinetry, Miele appliances, and long Max Lam Marmoreal island. On the second level, a spacious primary suite has Poliform closets and a spa-like bath.

The third floor has a large and open studio with “views that make us feel energized and ‘above it all,'” says Reid.
Up one more flight, a huge roof deck overlooks the city and Santa Monica Mountains.

“We often enjoy cocktails and sunbathing, observing the weekend bustle of Venice from a perfect distance,” he adds.
Built in 2018, the “XYZ” properties immediately garnered mass acclaim, including the AIA 2020 Merit Award for Residential Architecture.
