If you want to ensure that your investment property stays booked 365 days a year, months, even years in advance, you have to find something truly unique, in a fabulous destination, worthy of going viral on social media. When I saw this listing I knew it would make the perfect choice for the first of SecondShelters.com’s new series Extraordinary Investments.

In this series we’ll look at homes for sale around the world that would make excellent investment properties. But not just any great investment property. We’re going to comb the globe for unique properties that have that certain special something, that je ne sais quoi, that will make it something people can’t stop talking about.

Engine No. 7, the listing at 929 Bienville Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter certainly fits the bill.

A Historic Firehouse in New Orleans’ French Quarter

There’s nothing quite like a historic property in New Orleans to inspire drama and draw interest. Add to that it’s a historic firehouse smack in the middle of the French Quarter, walkable to Bourbon Street and Canal Street, and expertly restored and turned into a modern home with whimsical nods to its past throughout.

Originally built in 1908, the firehouse was renovated in 2005 by the New Orleans design firm Bockman + Forbes and has functioned as two units in past sales. The property is currently used as a single-family residence, but it could be split, and the only thing better than one ultimate New Orleans investment property is two ultimate New Orleans investment properties! The space has multiple entertaining spaces with inspired finishes throughout including suede walls, polished Bomanite floors, original exposed brick, reclaimed heart-pine millwork, and custom lighting.

The four bedrooms are split between floors, with a master on each, and each of the guest rooms have charming little sitting areas. Both floors host chef’s kitchens and gorgeous dining areas, with a to-die-for wine storage cooler in the upstairs dining room.

The heated saltwater pool is the perfect place to relax after a day spent enjoying the sights, sounds, tastes, and all-around decadence of New Orleans — to which you would have excellent access during your stay.

An important factor to consider with any investment property is the uncertainty of the future of short-term rental income. New Orleans, like many cities, is looking to limit the ability of property owners to rent private homes for vacation stays. This is an area where STRs are more likely to be allowed in the future, being so close to Bourbon Street in a mixed-used zone. But even barring short-term rental income, this New Orleans investment property would be a fabulous vacation home, or an easy long-term lease, either as one unit or two.

Engine No. 7 at 929 Bienville Street, New Orleans, is listed by George Jeansonne of French Quarter Realty at $4.35 million.
