Yes, the politics are crazy and the taxes are insane. But that coastline and weather — let’s face it, California is still among the most desirable locations for a Second Shelter. Case in point: The iconic Hotel del Coronado on San Diego’s Coronado Island is offering prospective homeowners a chance to score a residence while the property is still under construction.
The Shore House is the hotel’s final real estate offering, featuring 75 fully furnished homes slated for completion in 2022. Prices range from $1.3 million (833-square-feet) to $5.2 million (1,925-square-feet).

“We couldn’t be any more thrilled for the extraordinary community of Shore House owners who have decided to take part in this incredible new chapter for Hotel del Coronado,” Mike Collins, founding partner and CEO of IMI Worldwide Properties stated in a press release. “Shore House isn’t just the Del’s final new real estate offering. It’s also among the last coveted opportunities to own along the California coast.”
Celebrity cred abounds.
Since opening in 1888, The Hotel del Coronado has hosted a myriad of presidents, royalty, and celebrities—think The Duchess of Windsor, Thomas Edison, Frank Sinatra, and Esther Williams. It’s also where Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon filmed the classic “Some Like It Hot” in the late 1950s.

“Nowhere on earth is there a more comfortable hotel than this or one where more is done to promote the happiness and convenience of the guests,” American author L. Frank Baum (“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”) is reported to have said after a visit in 1907.
Architect Leo A. Daly is the mastermind behind the current $400 million renovation.
The result is a mix of old and new, preserving the hotel’s legacy while offering modern hotel-like amenities. The zero-edge pool is killer. It’s got a stellar ocean view along with direct access to Coronado Beach along the Silver Strand. There’s also a poolside bar, indoor/outdoor lounge area, cabanas, and fire pits.

The residences themselves sport an elevated beach- and bay-inspired aesthetic. Light-filled living rooms open up to private balconies with travertine gas fireplaces. Additional features include Wolf, Bosch, and Sub-Zero appliances, a 42-bottle wine refrigerator, European oak floors, wood-beamed ceilings, and ship-clad wall panels.
Views of Glorietta Bay, the Coronado Bridge, the San Diego skyline, and the Cuyamaca Mountains vary by unit. An exclusive collection of residences offer far-reaching views of the Pacific.
The property is located at 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado. For ownership inquires, visit their website.
