This Malibu Home Comes With Serious Celebrity Cred: Steve McQueen Lived Here in the 70s

No one epitomizes cool more than actor Steve McQueen. The innate sensuality. That bad boy demeanor. And don’t forget those piercing blue eyes, often shaded by supremely stylish Persol 714s. C’mon.
Legendary car chases? Racy chess games? Heart-stopping border runs? Check (Bullitt), check (The Thomas Crown Affair), and check (The Great Escape).
Women loved him. Men wanted to be him.
And while The Getaway was often associated with bank robberies and shootouts, it was McQueen’s chemistry with leading lady Ali MacGraw that made the movie memorable.

“This was a man who could walk into any room and any man, woman and child would go, ‘Whoa, what’s that?’ And I was no exception,” MacGraw told People magazine.
The pair fell helplessly in love: She was the biggest female star of the year; he was the biggest movie star in the world, according to Vanity Fair. “It was very, very passionate, and dramatic, and hurtful, and ecstatic,” says MacGraw. “It was pretty much a wipeout for both of us. But I think it’s safe to say it would have been impossible not to fall in love with Steve.”

Which leads us to this week’s celebrity Second Shelter. Turns out, McQueen’s 3,300-square-foot Malibu Beach house—the one he and MacGraw lived in the mid- to late-1970s—is on the market. Asking price: $12.2 million.
As would be expected, the property reeks style.
For starters, it’s situated on a private, gated street just off the main Broad Beach Road thoroughfare. The Pacific Ocean is steps away, with a surf break right in front of the house.

The Sotheby International Realty listing calls the home “a piece of Malibu legend and iconic history…a true getaway with spectacular ocean and whitewater views.”
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom residence has changed hands several times since McQueen lived there. In 2014, it sold for $9.93 million. Recent updates, according to Realtor Shen Schultz, include enhanced beach access, wide-plank wood flooring, and updated kitchen and baths.

Thoughtful design makes the most of swoon-worthy ocean views. Living spaces include a great room with vaulted ceilings and a downstairs den. There’s also a spa and multiple glass-railed decks.
A spacious chef’s kitchen sports an open dining area, large center island, and bright white cabinetry. The primary suite features a private terrace, sitting area, fireplace, and marble and stone bath. For the kiddos, there’s a bunkroom and playroom.

Like many oceanfront Malibu properties, lot sizes are limited. The home sits on just shy of a quarter-acre.
Trancas Country Market, a popular shopping and dining destination, is nearby. “This home is a true Malibu gem and a can’t-miss opportunity in one of Malibu’s most sought-after locations,” says Schultz.
