No doubt about it: New York’s Hudson Valley real estate market is hotter than ever. With inventory at record lows, buying a home may seem like a fairy tale. But fear not. Some lucky homeowners just may find their happy ending in this 19th century castle-like mansion.

The Queen Anne Victorian-style estate sports a fantastical mix of vibrant color, turrets, towers, and stained glass. Multiple balconies overlook the Hudson River. Asking price: $3.9 million.

The home’s current owners spent $4 million on a two-year renovation to preserve and restore every detail, according to the listing. There are ornate period details throughout, including embossed Lincrusta ceilings and walls. There are also eight fireplaces, four with original raised tile work.

An intriguing back story adds to the allure.

The property was once owned by economist Alvin Johnson, co-founder of the New School of Social Research and creator of the “University in Exile” program which aided 200 scholars from persecution in Nazi Germany. He reportedly purchased the home in 1919 after seeing it on the Christmas Eve cover of the Rockland County Journal.

Johnson home-schooled his seven children on the Nyack estate, including esteemed artist Dorothy Johnson Deyrup. Although best known for social realism, her body of work also reflects family and home.

The residence itself sits on 1.42 park-like acres featuring a private beach, pergola, and koi pond.

Paperwork is in order to rebuild the dock and install a pool. Additional amenities include a wrap-around porch, fountain, basketball court, and detached two-car garage complete with Tesla charging station.

Inside, the 7,049-square foot six manse has multiple living areas, a recreation room, and home theater. An eat-in kitchen includes top-of-the-line appliances. And a spacious primary suite—one of the home’s six bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths—sports a massive walk-in closet, sitting area, steam shower, and river views.

The Hudson River Valley location has seen a huge influx of residents, drawn by region’s painterly beauty and burgeoning craft and food culture.

Newcomers are also helping to sustain local businesses. The regions’s bars and shops are flourishing, reports the New York Times.

Nyack’s charming downtown offers seasonal street fairs and a Farmer’s Market. Nearby, Nyack Beach State Park at Hook Mountain is popular with walkers, bikers, and picnickers. And the Hopper House Art Center—birthplace of renowned realist painter Edward Hopper—features outdoor jazz in the summer.

309 North Broadway, Nyack, is listed by Ryan Paige and Adam Blankfort of Corcoran Baer & McIntosh.
