Red Brick Georgian “Home Alone” Home On The Market

Only $2.4 million in Winnetka, Ill. one of the Windy City’s most deliciously wealthy neighborhoods. This is the home made famous by adorable Macaulay Culkin in the 1990 hit movie, “Home Alone,” tapes and DVDs of which have run on our TV so much they may well be worn out.  Winnetka is approximately 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, and the Home Alone house is located at 671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka. (Zillow zestimates $1.3 million, go figure.)How many times when watching the show did my daughter, Cassie, look at that stately Georgian with twin white columns and say, “I LOVE that house”?

It just looks family-friendly.

Recall how in the movie, Culkin’s character, Kevin McCallister, is accidentally left behind in the house as his family boards a plane and leaves on a vacation to France. Do not think this is impossible amid family commotion: I once left a friend’s daughter who was about 7 at the time at my mother’s condo Behind the Pink Wall  when we were all piling into the car for dinner. Fortunately, I left her with my daughter, who was about 13 at the time. They did not have to ward off thieves, as Culkin did, who were trying to burglarize the house.

In fact, Winnetka has a pretty low crime rate.

According to Zillow, only some of the actual home’s interior was used for the movie. Most of it was shot on a set re-created in a facility nearby. The homeowners must have been grateful.

According to Reuters, John and Cynthia Abendshien own the 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath home and are downsizing since their daughter is grown. The couple lived in the home during the six-month long film shoot and Culkin even became their daughter’s friend.

The home is on .53 acres and features a gourmet kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, a sunroom, a dormered attic bedroom and a detached garage. It is located just a few blocks from Lake Michigan. If you know Chicago like I do, you know that anyone who says they are from Winnetka raises eyebrows: the village is considered to be the richest in the state, and Winnetka’s median home value is $777,900.
